It is with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Dr. David Apple, co-founder and founding Medical Director of Shepherd Center, whose extraordinary life and work left a lasting impact on the field of rehabilitation and on countless individuals and families. We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues, and the entire Shepherd Center community during this time of profound loss.
Dr. Apple’s vision and leadership were instrumental in shaping Shepherd Center into a globally respected institution since its founding in 1975 alongside Alana, Harold, and James Shepherd. Over the course of three decades as Medical Director, and later as Medical Director Emeritus, he dedicated himself to advancing care, innovation, and hope for those living with spinal cord injuries and other complex conditions. His influence helped establish Shepherd Center as a beacon of healing, compassion, and possibility.
Beyond the institution itself, Dr. Apple made significant contributions to the broader rehabilitation community. As a founding member and past president of the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA), a principal investigator in numerous research studies, and a widely respected expert in spinal cord injury care, he helped shape modern understanding and treatment in the field. His work has had a lasting influence on both clinical practice and patient outcomes worldwide.
Among his many achievements, one of Dr. Apple’s most meaningful contributions was his unwavering belief in recreation therapy. Understanding that recovery is about more than physical healing, he personally funded Shepherd Center’s first recreation therapist. That commitment grew into what is now the largest recreation therapy program in the country, helping thousands of patients rediscover purpose, independence, and joy through meaningful activities and new experiences.
Dr. Apple will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his compassion, generosity, and dedication to improving lives. His legacy lives on in every patient empowered, every life restored, and every moment of hope created through his vision.
